Day Four

Prologuo2Go presentation day….
before the presentations, class started with a short video on Aided Language.

What is Aided Language?
“Aided language stimulation (ALS) is a communication strategy, where a communication partner teaches symbol meaning and models language by combining his or her own verbal input with selections of vocabulary on the Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) system.”

The video defined the term and outlined the considerations one needs to think about when using an AAC tool for aided language. These considerations include practice using pictures in order for the child to speak in pictures, use keywords, pair the keyword with pictures as you talk, make it interesting, motivating, use short simple language, and lots of repetition.

I really liked this YouTube video on Aided Language.......so I thought I would share...

The Presentations
The activities presented provided additional opportunities to observe how Proloquo2Go would work, and how a nonverbal student could use the app not only at school but in their home and community. The activities centered around the nonverbal student communicating using the app to work with, play with, and interact with other students and in some cases family members….

I was totally amazed at the diversity of the activities that were used to create an interactive grid for a nonverbal student. Reflecting on this still brings a smile to my face and I can only imagine the student in such an enriched learning environment.....It had me thinking about a toolbox of teaching materials especially if all of the presentations activities were compiled in one.

This week has been filled with many “AHA” moments, multiple takeaways  and lots of new learning. Starting with the first day -the ten new terms and ten new apps - and progressing to this morning’s presentations

And I am thinking next week will prove to be the same….
